As an original team leader of Meat Standards Australia (MSA) Rod has developed the base concept and managed all subsequent scientific development. He continues to manage ground breaking research relating to MSA. He is an Adjunct Professor of Meat Science at the University of New England and has led collaborative consumer research projects for red meat in Japan, Korea, USA, Northern Ireland, Ireland, France, South Africa and New Zealand with a large number of papers published. From his own herd Rod developed a paddock to plate branded beef production and retailing business with deboning, retail cut fabrication, cooked meal production, retail and IT systems components. Rod developed operating systems to utilise MSA eating quality estimates combined with yield parameters to optimise revenue from each beef cut in every animal.

Rods unique technical capability and hands on approach have delivered domestic and global innovation and revenue growth at an industry and individual company level.

• The Howard Yelland Award (1999) Beef Improvement Association in recognition of pioneering efforts to improve consumer satisfaction with beef

 

• Life Membership of Australia Lot Feeders Association (1999) one of the first two life memberships awarded by ALFA

 

• Award of Recognition (1993) Branded Beef Association (1993) for work in pioneering beef grading and branded beef

 

• The Charlton Shire Citizen of the Year Australia Day Award (1989)

 

• Appointed to the Inaugural Council of the Victorian College of Agriculture and Horticulture (1983) serving for 5 years including acting as Chairman of the Buildings and Facilities committee

 

• President Australian Lot Feeders Association (ALFA) (1983-1987) in addition to serving on the ALFA council for 10 years

 

• Appointed to represent southern Australian producers in the late 80’s on the Brucellosis and Tuberculosis Committee (BTEC) Cattle Council of Australia -served 3 years until Australia became TB free

 

• Appointed to Bendigo School of Mines Agricultural Education Board (1981).
